Mobile App Privacy Policy — AI in a Shell

Last updated: April 26, 2026

This policy applies to the AI in a Shell iOS app submitted under the bundle identifier com.jhayer.synapse and to mobile app services served from https://ai-in-a-shell.com.

What We Collect

When you sign in with Apple or Google, we receive your name, email address, and provider account identifier. If you use Sign in with Apple and choose to hide your email, we receive Apple's private relay email. We use this to create and identify your account.

Your Learning Data

Your course progress, completed modules, XP, and streaks are synced to our servers so you can pick up where you left off on any device. This data is stored in a secure PostgreSQL database hosted on Neon (cloud infrastructure).

How Content Works

Course content (concept cards, quizzes, and reflection prompts) is fetched from our API hosted on Vercel. The app requires an internet connection to load courses.

AI Features

The AI tutor and answer evaluation features send your questions and responses to a third-party AI provider, Google Gemini, to generate replies and evaluate answers. These interactions are used to power the feature, enforce fair-use limits, and improve reliability. They are not used for advertising or sold to third parties.

Payments

Subscriptions are processed through Apple's in-app purchase system via RevenueCat. We store your subscription status (active, expired, etc.) but never see or store your payment details — Apple and RevenueCat handle that.

Third-Party Services

We use the following services:

  • Apple Sign In — authentication
  • Google Sign-In — authentication
  • RevenueCat — subscription management
  • PostHog — product analytics, with opt-out in Settings
  • Vercel — API and content hosting
  • Neon — database hosting
  • Google Gemini — AI responses (chat tutor, answer evaluation)

Each service has its own privacy policy. We do not share your data with any other third parties.

Product Analytics

We use PostHog to understand how users engage with the app, such as which screens are visited and whether subscription flows are completed. Analytics uses a device-level identifier and is not linked to your Apple ID, Google account, email, or name. You can disable analytics at any time in Settings.

Data We Store

  • Email address and name (from Apple or Google sign-in)
  • Provider account identifier and app user ID
  • Course progress and completed modules
  • XP totals and streak data
  • Subscription status
  • Reflection and quiz answers
  • AI tutor prompts and responses needed to provide the feature
  • AI usage counts (to enforce fair-use limits)

Tracking and Advertising

The mobile app does not use the IDFA, does not serve ads, and does not track you across apps or websites owned by other companies. Product analytics are used only to operate and improve AI in a Shell.

Privacy Choices

You can disable product analytics in the app from Settings → About → Analytics. You can also delete your account from Settings → Account → Delete Account. Account deletion removes your server-side app data, including progress, XP, streaks, and personal account information.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your data is retained as long as your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from Settings — this permanently removes all your data from our servers, including progress, XP, and personal information. Deletion is immediate and irreversible.

Children's Privacy

ai-in-a-shell is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us data, contact us and we will delete it.

Changes

If we change how data is handled, we will update this policy before making any changes.
